An excellent companion to Mr. Koren's first Wabi-Sabi book. I love that he has shared some history and how his thinking has evolved over the years. For anyone interested in this way of being, the new volume resonates. It is, like the first, a keeper.
I read the first Wabi-Sabi book by Koren over 15 years ago. It is my "bible". I am an artist, designer, purist, poet and aesthetic thought, practice guru & fanatic. Ok, I am an art nerd. Buy them both. Read and enjoy.
I’ve looked forward to this book since I learned of its impending publication April 2014. I greatly enjoyed WABI-SABI because it helped me understand object traits that I have appreciated since childhood.This new book primarily deals with four topics. The largest part of the text looks at the history and context of the words wabi and sabi, naturally focusing on the tea ceremony and its paraphernalia. Because the first book also includes a brief history, there is a certain amount of repetition in this section. After that Leonard Koren discusses his reasons for writing the first book and further defines wabi-sabi. To finish the text, he answers two questions: can the maker intentionally create a wabi-sabi object and can the electronic world ever be described as having wabi-sabi traits? For me, this last section is the most important one.
Not sure why he felt a need for this supplement other than to attempt to reinforce his claim of authorship of the term "wabi-sabi". His first book was itself an excellent explication of the concepts. Fewer words are sometimes better than more.
Clearly captures and presents the underlying motivations and drivers of a complex and obscure philosophy. Never done, never perfect, never eternal. An excellent travelogue of a dynamic journey.
This excellent book provides much food for thought and creativity. I enjoyed it immensely.
An intriguing sequel to Koren's earlier book. I am enjoying learning more about Wabi-Sabi.
