I have a number of books from the 3dTotal folks, and I've enjoyed everyone of them. This book is actually a collection of little "how to" discussions from various artists. The focus of them, of course, is creating digital paintings. Each little article is ~5 pages or so, and contains lots of excellent photos. They tend to be small, but do a great job of illustrating how to produce a particular effect. It reminds me a lot the articles in the Photoshop User magazine, except that these are focused exclusively on painting, and are not quite as "click-by-click" as the Photoshop users ones are.Lets be clear though... pretty much every article (aside from one or two) assumes the use of Photoshop as the painting tool. To be honest I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more using Painter (since that is a very common tool that specializes on this very thing) but oh well, perhaps they'll do another book on that.Others have mentioned that this book is for beginners, I disagree with that. This book assumes a pretty thorough understanding (but perhaps not quite mastery) of photoshop.I'm very glad to have this book, and I've enjoyed reading what I've read from it, and look forward to reading through the rest.
I have been in the process of self-teaching digital painting for some time now. I found this series of books on Amazon, and became so excited! The material inside is very helpful and includes topics like: backgrounds, skin textures, etc ... Definitely worth it!
Amazing book and great contents, but I have to say the quality is utter garbage, and consistent garbage.My first time ordering this book, I opened it and the first 20 pages fell right out. They weren't even glued in, you could see on the spine. I figured it was just an error, so I ordered another one.The second one was damaged in transit so it could not be delivered. Again, accidents happen. Ordered another one...The THIRD time, after waiting 20 days, the same thing happens as the first one. The pages are not even attached.
The construction of the book is just fine. The content really isn’t suited to a book. If you want to digitally paint portraits for example, get a book on anatomy like Loomis figure drawing for all its worth, and take an online class for $20 with Udemy and get critique as well. Environment concepts is a whole other discipline. These anecdotal teaching examples might even be discouraging ultimately for beginners. Probably not enough meat here to be of value to even an intermediate digital painter.
Same problem as everyone else. Book construction is terrible. All the pages fall out almost immediately. Can't comment on the content because I sent it back same day I received it.
This book has good material but the physical book falls apart. Every page that is turned comes out.I now have a loose leaf collection of pages. Difficult to keep in order and to keep track of.Hoping to get a better quality copy replacement
The book has very good samples and projects. The problem is that the downloads related to specific projects are not available. It's a quality publication spoiled by the producers dishonesty. I don't think Amazon should handle this product.
I've gotten a number for digital painting instruction books, but found nothing that really sat you down and said "This is the brush to use in this situation" or "to get this effect I did a,b and then c". This book does just that. If you want to make your digital paintings look more like the pros, this book takes you through making custom brushes (which is probably the most important thing other books didn't cover), where and when to use those brushes, and explains the techniques they use step by step and picture by picture. Each chapter is a tutorial written by the artist him/herself and addresses most things you would want to ask as an artist. It isn't a video where you're looking over their shoulder as they work, but this is the first book I would reach for if someone asks me about digital painting and should be the first you consider if you want to learn about it. If that were not enough Focal Press (the publishers) have web resources which include the custom brushes that accompany the tutorials in this book, so even if you have trouble creating your own brushes or wonder if you're doing it right you can download and use the same brushes the artists in the book used.
The techniques will definitely help a beginner, but the artwork presented in the book is hardly "Master" level quality. Besides, most of the techniques can be found in a cursory google search.
